In a random internet wander earlier this evening, I stumbled upon a reference at the Wormwood Society to a page which features a recipe for bacon vodka. Now, I must admit, the thought of introducing alcoholic liquid pig into my life did stun me for a second but after pondering the matter… I really want to try it. Really. Surely there is an unholy marriage of absinthe and bacon vodka just waiting to happen… Un Cochon Vert, if you like. If you can think of a good one email us at newlibertines [Email address: newlibertines #AT# absinthe.com.au - replace #AT# with @ ] and we may well give it a go!
For the foolish and the brave, here is the recipe (taken originally from Brownie Points Blog)
Bacon Vodka
(Makes up one pint)
Fry up three strips of bacon
Add cooked bacon to a clean pint sized mason jar. Trim the ends of the bacon if they are too tall to fit in the jar. Or you could go hog wild and just pile in a bunch of fried up bacon scraps.
Optional: add crushed black peppercorns.
Fill the jar up with vodka. Cap and place in a dark cupboard for at least three weeks.(No need to refrigerate)
At the end of the three week resting period, place the bacon vodka in the freezer to solidify the fats. Strain out the fats through a coffee filter to yield a clear filtered pale yellow bacon vodka.
Decant into decorative bottles and enjoy.
Mmm… bacon. I’m going to give this a try, so stay tuned.
